The world is awfully tough and hard time is hampering the young people who wasn't be born in a tycoon family and who has to be nothing but a self-made-person in the wild jungle. Since I have been involved in an academic tutor/mentorship at the university (1965 -?), I'm putting an emphasis on the future of humanity supposed to live almost a century long as a postulate. Then the true life starts at 40-50-years-old. Before, one has to gain multiple expertise in varied fields with efficient overlapping. To my opinion, one who starves in a given place should go where nobody wants to go and do the jobs nobody wants to do there provided that this is neither prostitution nor slavery. The lazy or conceited youngster who wants to drive his/her Porsche to the parking of his/her mansion in Central Park at 20 has more chance to be a loser than a billionaire at 25.
Kelly, don't be depressed by my speech because those who have followed my guideline - I don't like the word advice - usually have been grateful to me when they were 45. May I evoke a feeling I had when I was visiting in 2007 some friends in NSW, Australia. I heard there was plentiful opportunities of jobs in the city of Darwin, a city not as attractive as Sydney or Melbourne because of the climate. If I am an unemployed Aussie or an immigrant, I go there and I apply for the most cost-effective job according to the level of competence I've in real-time, i.e. NOW, not yesterday or tomorrow. I hate the individuals who educate the children with the idea that the business world works under the banner "Take-it-easy - Keep cool - Keep relax". The quality of life of the adults depends mostly on the well-balanced efforts made during the adolescent stages. Pasteur said "Chance smiles to well-prepared brain".
Jobs dealing with culture attract more and more young people because they don't seem to deal with fundamental "hard" sciences nor boring routine practice. Such a vision may be a fake or a mirage leading to a not-thru-street. Select a MS giving you a real genuine added value enhancing your profile, not a sterile diploma. Let you find a grant if you don't have the money and don't want to take a loan in a bank.
I attended ICOFOM'2014 excellent international meeting a few weeks ago at the Sorbonne. It sounds museology-museography is going to be submitted by soon for disruptive innovative changes in the management of the museums. Some jobs will be obsolete, new ones should emerge. Why don't you attend InclusiveMuseum'2014 in early August in LA? The group is on Linkedin.
